During the COVID pandemic I have worked with lots of students by SKYPE (as well as using e-mail and phone conversations) to make sure they do not miss out on crucial aspects of their education at this difficult time. This has been very successful, and I am happy to carry on working in this way with new students both in my local area and further afield.

I have helped school and college students through Key Stages 2 and 3, GCSE, A-Level, Cambridge STEP, and the Oxford Physics Aptitude Test.

I have also given guidance on University studies, helping students preparing for or resitting exams in Physics (quantum mechanics and electromagnetism), Chemistry (general BSc modules, HND practical, and modules in analytical chemistry and spectroscopy for BSc Forensic Science), Maths (general BSc modules, and specialist modules on mathematical modelling, relativity, graph theory, algorithms and numerical Computing), MSc Computation and Algorithms, and MSc Sport and Exercise (statistical analysis for a dissertation).

My youngest student has been 12 years old, and I am currently working with Christopher in Lancaster, who is in his 70s, and is studying Adult Learner Welsh.

I have a clean Enhanced Certificate from the Disclosure and Barring Service (issued 14 February 2015 when I applied to be a volunteer at Swansea University). Please note that according to CRB Direct (A ClearCheck Company) - Unlike other types of government paperwork, there is no expiration date on a DBS certificate. Please ask to see this Certificate as necessary.

Testimonials from parents and students are available on my website.

About me
========
I went to school in Swansea, and then I studied for and was awarded a BA (Hons), and then a Certificate of Postgraduate Study in Natural Sciences (specializing in Chemistry and Maths), at Cambridge University, between 1988 and 1993. I obtained a PhD from Birmingham University in Mathematical Chemistry in 1996. As an added extra, I gained an MA from Cambridge University a few years after first graduating, and an MA from Oxford University when I worked there, both without any further formal study! Whilst doing all these things, I tutored extensively in Maths and Science.

I have worked as a Research Fellow at the Universities of Oxford, Exeter, and Sussex, where I also taught Maths and Science. Between 1999 and 2011 I had an extremely fulfilling and rewarding career working as a Senior Lecturer in Mathematics at Northumbria University in Newcastle.

My main drive is a huge personal curiosity and a desire to explore, develop, and express creativity; to expand my understanding and insight; and to help others to do the same and become fully-rounded individuals who contribute and enrich the lives of others and society in general.

Since returning to Swansea in 2011, I have learned Welsh to A-Level standard and won a prize in the National Eisteddfod. In January 2020 I was appointed as a tutor in Welsh for Adults at Swansea University. I have also done tons of other studying, including Egyptology, and Creative Writing with Psychotherapy. I have worked in the Adult Education Department at Swansea University as a Tutor in Philosophy. I also regularly have poems published in the local newspaper. All of these experiences and skills enrich my life and enhance me as an educator.

Apart from my academic qualifications, I have been elected:

Chartered Mathematician and Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics
Chartered Physicist and Member of the Institute of Physics
Chartered Chemist and Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry

My Approach
=============
I love expressing creativity through learning and understanding new things, and strive to excel in sharing insight and in helping others to succeed in all their educational goals.

Education is a great gift and can be a wonderful experience under the right conditions for teacher and learner.

My approach is to work alongside learners with the aim of facilitating them to discover and develop their own most suitable strategies and techniques for achieving their goals. These goals can be very diverse: to feel more confident, to boost grades, to improve general skills, to pass specific exams, to gain entry to Universities, to write better reports, or to master specific subjects or areas.

For me, “good learning” is not just about “passing the exam” but also about developing skills which are genuinely enriching to the individual, and useful throughout life. And, “good learning” does not have to be a “hard slog”– it can be “fun” whilst also achieving serious and lasting results.

I am very down-to-earth, friendly, open, and approachable. I always take into account the learners age, experience, starting-level and needs, and am very hard-working and adaptable in finding new and appropriate ways to get the required results for each individual.

I regularly ask for detailed feedback on my own performance as an educator, and on the students experience as learners in order to fine-tune my activities to optimise outcomes. I do my homework each week, too! I am also happy to be available (as appropriate) for telephone, e-mail, or e-conferencing consultations between face-to-face sessions to facilitate the learning experience.
